Cannabigerol (CBG) is often referred to as the ‘mother cannabinoid’ because THC and CBD are derived from it. Some users report that CBG may offer stronger stress relief and anti-inflammatory effects compared to CBD. Additionally, there are indications that CBG could be beneficial for digestive health.
What is CBG? Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid typically most abundant in low-THC and high-CBD cannabis strains, including hemp. Like THC, CBG interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the brain. However, CBG is believed to act as a buffer to the psychoactivity of THC, potentially alleviating the paranoia sometimes associated with higher levels of THC. Often referred to as the 'mother of all cannabinoids,' CBG is the precursor to other cannabinoids, derived from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). Common cannabinoids derived from cannabis plants include cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
CBG is found in smaller quantities in cannabis plants, usually comprising about 1% of the plant compared to 20-25% of CBD or 25-30% of THC. This rarity makes consumer products derived from CBG rare and often expensive. Despite this, CBG is growing in popularity due to its potential benefits. CBG is thought to bind to both cannabinoid receptors, potentially enhancing the function of anandamide, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in enhancing pleasure and motivation, regulating appetite and sleep, and alleviating pain.
